Root Canals

A root canal will be needed if the decay has reached the tooth's nerve. The involved tooth becomes very sensitive to temperatures, chewing, or even can become a toothache that can keep a person up at night. Essentially, a root canal involves cleaning out a tooth's infected nerve tissue then filling and sealing the canal.

Why a Root Canal?

A cavity that has been left untreated can become larger. Once the cavity reaches the pulp/nerve of the tooth, an infection forms at the base of the root canal, causing an abscess. This abscess can be localized at the end of the tooth’s root or it can break through the surrounding bone and cause swelling inside or outside the mouth.

The only other option for a tooth requiring a root canal is to have the tooth extracted. Initially extracting the painful tooth is the least expensive option, but long term problems are associated with missing teeth. The dentists at Family Dental Group will explain the pros and cons of a root canal vs. an extraction. The dentist and the front desk folks at Family Dental Group can review costs of each procedure after an exam. Please call us at (406) 541-2886 or request an appointment online to become our patient.
